THIS IS CERTAINLY BOATLOAD OF INFORMATION FOR A NEWBIE LIKE ME.
I WORK AS A PROFESSIONAL IN TESTING FUEL SYSTEMS AND CALIBRATING ECM AROUND IT, BUT HAVE NEVER PLAYED AROUND THE OBD-2.
I PLAN ON CONNECTING OBD2 BLUETOOTH/WIFI SCANNER ON MY CAR AS WELL. nOT SURE WHETHER IS IT SAFE ENOUGH TO NOT SCREW THE ELECTRONICS. HAVE ALSO HEARD A LOT ABOUT HIGH POWER CONSUMPTION AND WILL DRAIN BATTERY. BUT CAN IT BE USED DURING THE ENGINE IS oN ? AND DURING DRIVING AS WELL ?

i HAVE RECENTLY INSTALLED A PIGGYBACK ECU (DISELTRONIC) AND WANT TO MONITOR PERFORMANCE CHANGE WITH THAT. WILL OBD-2 BE A GOOD ASSISTANT FOR DOING THAT ?

In the United States, many states now use OBD-II testing instead of tailpipe testing in OBD-II compliant vehicles (1996 and newer). Since OBD-II stores trouble codes for emissions equipment, the testing computer can query the vehicle's onboard computer and verify there are no emission related trouble codes and that the vehicle is in compliance with emission standards for the model year it was manufactured.

In reply to <a href="https://www.circuitcrush.com/how-obd-ii-works/#comment-252">David</a>.

Ahhh, the good old days, which I can only imagine. I do all the repairs and maintenance on 2 different cars and have been doing my own work for a while. The oldest car I've ever owned was a 1991 model. The cool thing about the newer cars (say 2010 and newer) is that they do a lot of cool things with technology. I suppose that can be a double edge sword though, and it can cut you depending on which side you're on (the wow! cool technology side or the damn, I gotta fix this side). Hopefully, the series on OBD-II can inspire some people to use modern technology to its fullest. Glad you enjoyed the article!
